Behind the Lens: Executing a Fast-Paced 3-Day Production for ECPI University
High-volume video production requires a delicate balance: you have to maintain high cinematic standards while working against a tight schedule and a packed shoot list.
We recently wrapped an intensive three-day shoot with ECPI University, capturing a massive library of visual content designed to tell their story across web, broadcast, and social channels. Executing a shoot like this takes meticulous planning, versatile gear, and a tight two-person crew firing on all cylinders.
Here is a look inside our process, how we structured the shoot, and why a lean production workflow is often the secret to capturing authentic, dynamic content.
The Scope: 3 Days, 5 Interviews, Endless B-Roll
When you’re tasked with capturing the energy, hands-on learning environment, and human stories of a multi-faceted university campus, you can’t afford wasted time. Over three back-to-back production days, our goals included:
5 In-Depth Interviews: Capturing key messaging from faculty, leadership, and students.
Full Stills Photography Package: High-res environmental portraits, action shots, and marketing assets.
Extensive B-Roll Coverage: Capturing the authentic, fast-paced environment of real-world classroom labs and campus life.
To pull this off without overwhelming our subjects or blowing past our timeline, we intentionally kept our footprint agile.
The Setup: Strategic Two-Camera Framing
For the five sitting interviews, we deployed a two-camera rig designed to deliver maximum polish and narrative flexibility in the edit.
1. The Key/A-Cam (Medium Tight)
Our main camera framed the interviewee from the chest up, capturing primary eye contact, clear emotional connection, and direct delivery.
2. The B-Cam (Profile/Tight Angle)
Positioned off-axis at a ~45-degree angle, our secondary camera gave us a complementary tight profile shot.
Why two angles matter: A dual-camera setup isn't just about looking slick; it’s an editing necessity. It allows us to cut seamlessly between key statements, stitch together cohesive answers without awkward jump cuts, and maintain visual interest throughout longer talking-head segments.
Crew Workflow: The Power of a 2-Person Team
There is a common myth in video production that bigger always means better. On a active campus, a massive crew with massive equipment trucks can actually slow down momentum and make non-professional talent (like students or professors) feel self-conscious.
Our two-person crew operated with zero friction:
Director / Interviewer / Audio Lead: Focused entirely on talent comfort, asking the right questions to pull out genuine answers, while monitoring clean audio feeds and narrative flow.
Director of Photography / Camera & Lighting Lead: Managed our lighting setups, framed the dual-camera angles, monitored exposure, and seamlessly transitioned to hand-held stills/b-roll mode the second an interview wrapped.
By running lean, we stayed nimble. When an unscheduled hands-on lab demonstration opened up, we didn't need 30 minutes to move a massive crew—we grabbed our hand-held rigs, adjusted our lighting, and walked right in to capture the raw action.
Transitioning From Video to Stills & B-Roll
To maximize our three days on site, every interview setup was leveraged for environmental photography before tearing down light stands. Once the sitting interviews were locked, we transitioned immediately into capturing dynamic b-roll—shadowing students through real-time training, hands-on simulations, and collaborative lab environments.
By pairing high-frame-rate cinematic video moves with crisp lifestyle photography, we delivered a comprehensive media asset library that ECPI can pull from for months across print, digital ads, and video campaigns.
